Murinometric measurements and retroperitoneal adipose tissue in young rats exposed to the high-fat diet: Is there correlation?

Abstract: Aim This study aimed to verify the correlation between murine measurements and retroperitoneal adipose tissue in rats exposed to the high-fat diet. Material and methods: Wistar male adult rats, descendants of mothers who consumed a high-fat diet during pregnancy and lactation and fed the same diet after weaning were used. At 60 days of life, body weight, longitudinal axis and waist circumference (WC) were measured. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and the Lee Index were calculated for a posterior analysis of the corr… Show more

“…However, animals fed HFDs did not exhibit a significant increase in the final BW compared with animals fed SDs. According to Macêdo et al , 31 an HFD is able to promote the accumulation of retroperitoneal fat, and the Lee index seems to be the best marker to diagnose retroperitoneal fat accumulation in mice. Moreover, Pomar et al 32 demonstrated that the offspring of rats fed an HFD during lactation, despite having a greater amount of adipose tissue, had a lower BW as a result of a lower amount of lean mass.…”
