“…Recent systematic surveys on different environments within the island have failed to record the occurrence of this gecko outside anthropic and peri-antropic habitats Winck, 2012). However, more recent surveys carried out by our research team have recorded 17 individuals (and two eggs) of H. mabouia in natural environments of Praia do Sul, in the RBEPS, thus evidencing that this species has become an invasive exotic in that area (Telles et al, 2015). Considering the two previous surveys in the island that did not find this lizard in natural environments, we suggest that the invasion of the restinga habitat in Praia do Sul by this gecko may be quite recent.…”

“…Hemidactylus mabouia, a non-indigenous lizard, was recorded in a forest fragment next to a banana plantation at the borders of the MONAST. This gekko is native to Africa, and has invaded a number of different natural environments in Brazil (Rocha et al 2011, Telles et al 2015, Oliveira et al 2016, including many ombrophilous forest remnants (Rocha et al 2011;Telles et al 2015). The occurrence of H. mabouia in the MONAST is consistent with the dispersal of the species in other regions, where it is associated with open areas impacted by human activities (Rocha et al 2011;Oliveira et al 2016).…”

“…We also recorded the non-indigenous gekkonid Hemidactylus mabouia, a species of African origin, as invasive in different restinga habitats (e.g. Hatano et al, 2001;Rocha and Bergallo, 2011;Telles et al, 2015;Oliveira et al, 2016;Winck et al, 2016). In one study we analyzed the lizard species in 16 restinga habitats encompassing three Brazilian states (Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Bahia) and along more than 1500 km of Brazilian coast, registering this invasive lizard in some of them (Rocha et al, 2014).…”
