Eutrophication potential of lakes: an integrated analysis of trophic state, morphometry, land occupation, and land use

Abstract: Despite being inside a protected area, Lake Sumidouro has been impacted by the anthropogenic occupation of the surrounding area since the 1970's, compromising the ecological integrity of the lake and the sustainable use of natural resources. This study examined the current trophic classification of the lake and developed methods for improving it through an integrated analysis of morphometric and limnological parameters, land use and land occupation in the watershed, and eutrophication potential. Data for the l… Show more

“…Primary production in terms of Chl-a production is a commonly used surrogate of eutrophication that is mainly based on phosphorus and nitrogen availability [13], and Carlson [14] has developed the trophic state index (TSI) for the assessment of eutrophication that is primarily based on Chl-a level in a water body. Numerous researchers have reported dealing mainly with eutrophication issues from the USA [15], Spain [16], Canada [17], China [12], South Korea [2], New Zeeland [18], Finland [19], and Brazil [20].…”

“…In order to improve the phosphorus removal efficiency, a post-precipitation simulation (introduction of precipitant before the secondary settling tank) was conducted with the use of PIX 111 in the form of liquid iron chloride (III)—FeCl 3 , with 12% of clear iron and density of 1500 kg m −3 , which is a solution widely used to enhance the elimination of phosphorus compounds (Silvino and Barbosa 2015 ). The PIX introduction point was set so as to minimize dosage in order to obtain less sewage sludge as well as to allow for the possibility of using secondary settling tank capacity for wastewater final clarification (Aboulhassan et al 2006 ; Nowacka et al 2014 ; Smol 2018 ).…”

“…Morphological parameters, such as bathymetry, volume, land-use and land-cover pattern around the lake catchment, significantly influence nutrient concentrations or eutrophication status of a lake basins (Silvino and Barbosa 2015). Total organic carbon (TOC), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) as nutrients play a vital role in maintaining and defining the tropic status in different lacustrine environments (Meyers and Ishiwatari 1993;Meyers and Lallier-Verges 1999).…”
