Contamination from an affluent of Furnas reservoir by trace metals

Abstract: This study aims to determine concentrations and characterize trace metals distribution in an affluent of Furnas reservoir, Alfenas-MG. Water and sediment samples were taken monthly, 2010/10-2011/07 in five sites of Córrego do Pântano for subsequent determination of Pb, Cd and Zn levels by chemical analysis. The stream studied is in disagreement with Brazilian legislation for Class II water bodies (CONAMA 357). The highlights are the unsuitable concentrations of Pb for human consumption, according to Ministry o… Show more

“…Chemicals are known as important agents of global change (Bernhardt et al, 2017). Industrial development and urbanization release a variety of pollutants into the environment, with still unknown consequences to organisms (Förstner & Wittmann, 1983;Filser, 2008;Cavalcanti et al, 2014). The urbanization process usually results in changes in land cover, soil erosion, and waste production, which leads to a chemical load on the surrounding water bodies, altering the ecosystem and leaving records of disturbances in the sediments (Förstner & Wittmann, 1983).…”

“…The large expansion of big cities results in environmental impacts on local water resources, which often serve as a source of water for the same populations (Cavalcanti et al, 2014). Trace metals entering aquatic ecosystems through runoff or atmospheric deposition and eventually accumulate in sediments (Bing et al, 2016).…”
