“…Indeed, such disorders do not entail the use of illegal substances and are easily accessible during the lockdown. Research evidence concerning such phenomena would seem to be extendable to situations where traumatic events do not occur on a global scale (57), but at an individual level (58). Furthermore, the survey is based on an adequate sample size, across all regions of a country that has been strongly affected by COVID-19 infection, and the psychological pressure due to the spread of the infection has been considered in the statistical analyses.…”

“…In humans, early-life adversity arising from physical, emotional, and sexual abuse correlates with an increased risk of substance use and other mental health disorders including anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and schizophrenia ( Espejo et al, 2007 ; Heim et al, 2008 ; Copeland et al, 2013 ; Merrick et al, 2017 ; Seidenfaden et al, 2017 ). Children exposed to early-life adversity through abuse and/or neglect also have increased risk of drug use, relapse following drug abstinence, and overall increased prevalence of substance use disorders during adulthood ( Messina et al, 2008 ; Van Dam et al, 2014 ; Teixeira et al, 2017 ). Adolescents from a family with a history of substance use disorders have an increased likelihood of experiencing more frequent and severe stressors, and initiation of substance use is indirectly influenced by stress exposure; indicative of a cycle of stress and substance use ( Charles et al, 2015a ; b ).…”
