Zarit Burden Interview Psychometric Indicators Applied in Older People Caregivers of Other Elderly

Abstract: Objective:to derive psychometric indicators of construct validity and internal consistence of the Zarit Burden Interview scale for caregivers, describing associations of the scale with metrics related to care demands, coping strategies and depression in aged caregivers. Method:crosscutting descriptive and correlational study. The convenience sample was composed by a hundred and twenty one senior caregivers (Avg=70.5 ± 7.2 years, 73% women). They answered a questionnaire to check the physical and cognitive dema… Show more

“…b) Care burden: evaluated by the Zarit Burden Scale (18) . We used factors resulting from a second construct validation conducted in Brazil (20) : (1) Role-related conflicts; (2) Intrapsychic conflicts; (3) Negative competences and expectations of care. The scale contains 22 items and its total score can range from 0 to 88 points, being the highest ones indicators of higher perceived burden.…”

“…These factors were identified by means of exploratory factorial analysis achieved following orthogonal varimax rotation and the commonality of the items of the Zarit Burden Interview Scale. 7 To investigate the quality of life as perceived by the caregiver, the CASP-19 scale was used for individuals aged 55 years and over. This acronym designates control, autonomy, self-realization and pleasure, and is based on Maslow's basic human needs theory 19 .…”

“…Caregiver's responses are assessed through a ve point likert scale (never to always) and the scores range between 0-88. Getting a score of 0 to 20 showed little or no care burden, score of 21 to 40 a moderate, and the score of 41 to 88 a severe care burden (24,25). The validity of this tool was investigated and con rmed by Talebi et al (2016).…”
