Ankle Sprain Risk Factors: A 5-Month Follow-Up Study in Volley and Basketball Athletes

Abstract: Introduction Ankle sprain is a frequent sports injury among volley and basketball players, and identifying risk factors is necessary to prevent injuries and prolong their careers. Objective To identify intrinsic and extrinsic factors in basketball and volleyball players related to the risk of ankle sprain injury over a five-month follow-up period. Methods Ninety-four Brazilian young competitive athletes (15.8±1.7 years, 47 basketball and 47 volleyball players) participated in this study. They were evaluated … Show more

“…Competitive sports are the study of how to strengthen the scientific nature of sports training, to explore the objective laws of sports training, to continuously improve the level and performance of various sports techniques, to climb the peak of world sports technology, to create world records, and to win the human sports activities of winning competitions [ 7 , 8 ]. In Chinese academic circles, in a general sense, people divide sports into three categories: competitive sports, mass sports, and school sports.…”

“…The findings of our study is not supported by some of previous studies, which have shown increased risk of ankle injury in subjects with an underpronated to supinated foot. 13,[38][39][40] This may be due to very low frequency of foot hypersupination in our study. However, in a study by Cherati et al, there was no significant association between foot posture and occurrence of ankle sprain.…”

“…For example, a 5-month follow-up study on 94 young competitive athletes (basketball and volleyball) has recently shown that among assessed intrinsic risk factors of previous history, ankle ligament laxity, range of motion of the ankle-foot complex, electromyographic response time of ankle evertors, postural control and muscular torque of ankle invertors and evertors, none was significantly associated with occurrence of ankle sprain. 13 Nevertheless, risk factors for LAS injuries are not well established and there is conflicting evidence regarding underlying causes associated with this injury. [14][15][16][17][18] The objective of the present study was to investigate whether certain intrinsic factors (foot hyperpronation, generalized joint laxity) and clinical tests (anterior drawer and talar tilt tests, single-leg balance test and star excursion balance test, ankle plantar flexion and dorsiflexion and first metatarsophalangeal dorsiflexion range of motion assessments) could predict the incidence of LAS among elite football and basketball players during a full year.…”
