Impact of Resilience on Stress and Recovery in Athletes

Abstract: Introduction: Resilience is a positive psychological characteristic that reflects an individual's capacity to better perceive, deal with, and overcome adversity; the sports environment is replete with adversities, which increase athletes' stress levels and may lead to undesirable outcomes. Objective: To analyze the impact of resilience levels on stress and recovery in athletes. “…Contrary to the hypothesis, resilience did not predict also changes in controlled goal motives. In spite of the evidence indicating that resilience is linked to diminished ill-being ( Sarkar and Fletcher, 2014 ; Codonhato et al, 2018 ; Wagstaff et al, 2018 ), there is less research on the implications of resilience on motivation-related processes that may be operating in any relationship between this personality disposition and well-being or ill-being outcomes. In line with current findings, past research has found that when the predictor was a positive personality variable (e.g., self-oriented perfectionism and resilience), only autonomous motivation was a significant mediator between this personality factor and well-being or ill-being.…”

“…In this line, past sport research suggests that resilience is positively related to other psychological resources such as self-efficacy ( Cardoso and Sacomori, 2014 ), optimism and coping strategies ( Belem et al, 2014 ), and intrinsic motivation and self-regulation ( Brown et al, 2015 ). In contrast, resilience in athletes has been negatively related to pessimism, self-blame, anxiety, and depression ( Sarkar and Fletcher, 2014 ) as well as to stress and burnout ( Codonhato et al, 2018 ; Wagstaff et al, 2018 ). In the same way, previous literature in university student athletes demonstrated that resilience had a positive relationship with performance and psychological well-being and a negative relationship with psychological disorders ( Hosseini and Besharat, 2010 ).…”

“…For this reason, we have considered it valid for exploratory purposes to examine the relationship between the regulatory mode orientations (locomotion and assessment) and the use of sport devices. A second frequently reported association in the runners' literature is that between perceived stress and resilience Sarkar & Fletcher, 2014;Codonhato et al, 2018). Athletes who practice endurance sports are well aware that their activity can be critical, causing unexpected events or random factors related to their physical and mental state.…”
