Lighting in the shackling area: conciliating broiler welfare with labor comfort

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate if blue lighting could reduce broiler stress and comply with legal labor comfort requirements in a new shackling area of a middle-size processing plant. In this study, the old shackling area was compared with the new area, where a blue lighting system was designed and implemented according to the regulations. The old and new areas were video-and audio-recorded during the shackling of 33,850 broilers in each area. Data were statistically analyzed using the non-para… Show more

“…Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of animal welfare issues, and have started to demand the adoption of methods that mitigate animal suffering during slaughter (Elrom, 2000). However, welfare concerns must be addressed using technical approaches, such as those proposed in a study on the effects of lighting in the shackling area on broiler welfare (Adamczuk, 2014).…”

“…Although colour has been confused with illuminance in many trials, wavelength has been reported to have an unquestionable effect on poultry production, behaviour and welfare (Lewis and Morris, 2000;Tavares et al, 2015). Light distribution, duration, and intensity have a direct effect on flock performance and welfare (Adamczuk et al, 2014).…”

“…Mitigation measures : A mitigation measure used to minimise fear in Phase 1 is blue light (440–490 nm) as it calms birds down and allows them to rest in the lairage zone (see Figure ) and during handling for shackling. The blue light still allows the workers to see and handle birds with precision, leading to less stress for the animals (Adamczuk et al., ). Avila and Abreu () reported that blue light is used for catching birds as it overrides the visual capacity of the birds and they remain still, facilitating the movement of the catcher.…”

“…According to Gregory and Bell (1987), factors such as excessive sunlight, inadequate equipment, and loss of eye contact with other birds may contribute to increased agitation in broilers during the pre-slaughter stages and compromise their welfare. Higher light intensity can make the animals more active, while dark environments decrease activity, agitation, and escape behavior (Kristensen et al, 2006; Adamczuk et al, 2014).…”
