Exploring the structural and construct validity of the Brazilian Food Cravings Questionnaire-Trait-reduced (FCQ-T-r)

Abstract: Objective:Food cravings play an important role in the neurobiology of appetitive behavior, being positively associated with negative feelings, eating disorders, and obesity. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Brazilian Food Cravings Questionnaire-Trait-reduced (FCQ-T-r), a short version of the most widely used measure of this behavior. Methods:Undergraduate students (n=505) completed the full version of the FCQ-T and the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire. Respondents’ height and weigh… Show more

“…The FCQ-T-r has a unidimensional structure [58], which was replicated in several studies [26, 78-80, 82, 83]. The FCQ-T-r has excellent internal reliability (α > .90, [26,55,[78][79][80][81][82][83]). Retest-reliability over two weeks was excellent for the Persian version (r = .92, [81]) and-considering the long time period of six months-was also good for the German version (r = .74, [55]).…”

“…For the FCQ-T-r, 15 of the 39 items of the German FCQ-T that had the highest item-total-correlations were chosen (Table 1). Although the FCQ-T-r was originally developed in German [58], it has since been used and evaluated in English [78], Portuguese [79], French [80], Persian [81], Spanish [26], and Italian [82,83] as well. A sum score of 50 discriminated between individuals with and without "food addiction" (as measured with the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0) with high sensitivity and specificity and has, thus, been proposed as a possible cut-off score that may indicate pathologically elevated, clinically relevant levels of trait food craving [84].…”

“…The first family is composed of 13 original instruments [27,29,31–46] and 52 variations or translations [34,47–107] inspired by the QSU [27], the first validated multi‐dimensional craving assessment instrument. These instruments are self‐report questionnaires composed of 7‐point Likert scales.…”

“…The fifteen items of FCQ-T with the higher item loading composed the FCQ-T-r belonging in a single factor. 28 Validations in different populations revealed one factor as well 31,33,40,41 with high interval consistency but also the full version of the questionnaire had been previously validated. However, PCA of the questionnaire performed on an English population revealed a two-factor structure which afterwards was rejected by parallel analysis.…”
