Objective: To describe and analyze characteristics of cases of spinal cord Trauma (SCT) among traffic accident victims admitted to a referral hospital. Method: Descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study with quantitative approach, developed in the city of Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The population consists of 1,884 medical records of patients admitted to hospital after damage caused by traffic accidents from January to December 2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: Among the victims of traffic accidents, there was a male predominance (85.4%). The most affected age group was 21 to 30 years (29%). Accidents involving motorcyclists were predominant (82.9%) and 43 victims (2.3%) suffered spinal injury. Among these ones, there was a prevalence of males (86%), in the age group between 21 and 30 years (35.7%). In 30 cases (69.8%), the victims had spinal injuries. The cervical level (55.8%) was dominant. In addition, 46.7% of the victims were classified as ASIA and there were 9 cases (30%) of paraplegia and 1 case (3.3%) of tetraplegia. A bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between the variable presence of SCT and type of accident (p <0.001), use of cervical collar (p <0.005), injuries in other anatomical regions (p <0.001), surgical treatment (p < 0.001) and outcome of the patient’s situation (p <0.005). Conclusions: Among the victims of traffic accidents and SCT there was a predominance of males, young individuals and motorcyclists. Keywords: Epidemiology. Traffic-accidents. Public health. The public network of bicycle lanes in Bogota Colombia, known as 'Cicloruta', is the largest in Latin America. Despite its success, disparities in regards to the distribution of routes by socioeconomic status (SES) of neighborhoods have not been examined. This exploratory analysis sought to assess the distribution and distance to the city network of bicycle lanes by neighborhood SES in urban blocks located in flat terrains. We conducted a spatial ecological analysis using secondary data obtained through geographic information systems from official databases. We calculated the shortest route from the centroid of each urban neighborhood block to the closest access point of the bicycle lane network. The median distance to the bicycle lane network from urban block centroids was 444m. This median distance ranged from 1,062m for the most disadvantaged areas to 315m for the wealthiest, showing a clear difference in the spatial distribution. Results show wide variation in the distribution of bicycle lanes by SES, but particularly for the most disadvantaged areas. Improving the conditions for cycling in a more equitable manner may involve expanding the network of bicycle lanes for populations living in less advantaged areas.

Introducción: Los accidentes de tránsito se han convertido en un importante problema de salud pública debido a su alta morbimortalidad. La tendencia en lesiones y muerte por accidentes de tránsito, se encuentra en niveles alarmante en países como Colombia. Objetivo: Caracterizar epidemiológicamente las lesiones por accidentes de tránsito reportados en personas atendidas en una institución de salud en el municipio de Pereira entre 2014 y 2017. Materiales y métodos: Estudio descriptivo y transversal basado en fuentes secundarias según características sociodemográficas, epidemiológicas y clínicas de los accidentes de tránsito atendidos en una entidad de salud del municipio de Pereira, durante el período comprendido entre los años 2014 a 2017. Resultados: Se analizaron 460 casos en el periodo estudiado (64,1%) en hombres. El motociclista representó el 44,3% de las víctimas. El 64,3% sufrieron contusiones, seguido del 20,9% de fracturas, el 53% de las lesiones se presentaron en miembros superiores e inferiores. Conclusiones: Existió un incremento significativo de las lesiones ocasionadas por accidentes de tránsito, producidas por motociclistas y peatones, asociadas a la impericia del conductor y la distracción del peatón, el cual desencadenó en contusiones y fracturas y aumento de la carga de la enfermedad.
