Exercise programs for people with dementia

Abstract: BACKGROUND: This is an update of our previous 2008 review. Several recent trials and systematic reviews of the impact of exercise on people with dementia are reporting promising findings. OBJECTIVE:Primary: Do exercise programs for older people with dementia improve cognition, activities of daily living (ADLs), challenging behaviour, depression, and mortality in older people with dementia? “…The highest yield of methylbenzoate ester was obtained with [PyH][HSO 4 ], 1a under the optimized conditions (Table , entry 1). The similar activity of Brønsted ionic liquids with HSO 4 − anion has also been reported in other instances of the Fischer esterification reaction . On the other hand, the pyridinium containing citrate and NO 3 − anions demonstrated poor activity.…”

“…Functioning is considered to be highly important in geriatric practice, since it is strongly associated with pathology, and is a determinant of measurable outcomes, such as morbidity, mortality, hospitalization, and costs, as well as efficacy of interventions and treatments. The association of functioning with quality of life and need of care is well established [ 50 ].…”

“…These findings are substantiated by results from intervention studies that have documented positive effects of exercise on cognitive performance in healthy elderly persons (Ahlskog et al, 2011;Carvalho et al, 2014;Düzel et al, 2016;Jonasson et al, 2016;Liu-Ambrose et al, 2008;Maass et al, 2015;P. J. Smith et al, 2010;Voss et al, 2014; but see Young et al, 2015) as well as in dementia patients (Farina et al, 2014;Groot et al, 2016;Heyn et al, 2004; but see Forbes et al, 2014). Thus, between-person differences in physical activity may partly account for differences in cognitive performance in aging.…”
