Intramuscular lipoma of the subscapularis muscle

Abstract: CONTEXT: Intramuscular lipomas are benign tumors that infiltrate the muscles. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 58-year-old female patient with an axillary lump. The lump was a lipoma inside the subscapularis muscle. It is important to differentiate these lesions from liposarcomas and from other diseases that may present as axillary lumps. The most accurate imaging method for differentiating benign lipomatous tumors from liposarcomas is magnetic resonance imaging, but surgical removal of these intramuscul… Show more

“…Liposarcomas are generally multilobed with thick septa within the tumor mass and have a size > 10 cm. [12][13][14] Although the shoulders are the site where intramuscular lipomas are frequently found, 1,3,15 their presence within the rotator cuff muscles is really exceptional, with a few cases reported in the supraspinatus 11 and subscapular 16,17 and a single case in the infraspinatus, 18 with no such cases reported in the teres minor so far.…”

“…The biceps brachii [59], the subscapularis [60], the deltoid [61][62][63], the supraspinatous [64,65], the infraspinatus [66] and the brachioradialis [67] may be involved, while localization adjacent to the proximal radius may be complicated by symptomatic radial nerve compression [68][69][70]. Involvement of the tensor fascia lata has also been reported [71] as well as of the vastus lateralis [51] and of the gluteus maximus and gastrocnemius [14].…”
