Prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors in hemodialysis patients

Abstract: A B S T R A C T ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors in hemodialysis patients. MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study of 344 hemodialysis patients from Goiânia, Goiás aged 18 years or more. The dependent variable, malnutrition, was investigated by the Subjective Global Assessment. The independent variables included socioeconomic, demographic, and lifestyle data, clinical history, and energy and protein intakes. The patients underwent anthropometric measurements and laborator… Show more

“…These rates were higher than the rates reported in our study. Another study in Brazil showed 4.22% mild to moderate malnutrition in their hemodialysis patients (12). The prevalence rates of malnutrition in hemodialysis patients in Spain (9), Jordan (19), Saudi Arabia (16), Iraq (17) and Palestine (18) were respectively as 41.1%, 62%, 55%, 63.5% and 47.2%.…”

“…Quanto às características da população estudada, houve prevalência do sexo feminino, diferindo dos dados da literatura 14 , enquanto a idade média foi semelhante a de outros estudos nacionais. 15,16 A DRC é mais comum com o avanço da idade, fase onde ocorre redução fisiológica da filtração glomerular e surgem lesões renais secundárias a doenças crônicas comuns da idade. 17 Além dos idosos, indivíduos hipertensos e diabéticos são considerados grupos de risco para desenvolver a DRC.…”

“…Otherwise positive nitrogen balance cannot be achieved in spite of high protein intake (Naır, 2005). Energy intake below the recommendations (<35kkal/kg/d) is related with 1.22 times higher malnutrition risk in hemodialysis patients (Freitas et al, 2014). Hemodialysis has net effect with nitrogen losses from skeletal muscle.…”
