P2X7 receptor antagonist improves gastrointestinal disorders in spontaneously hypertensive rats

Abstract: The purinergic system participates in the control of blood pressure. Hypertension promotes the occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders such as intestinal inflammation and gastric emptying delay. This study aimed i) to investigate the participation of the P2X7 receptor blocker Brilliant Blue G (BBG) on gastric emptying of solids and changes in oxidative stress in the gastric fundus, duodenum, and colon of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and ii) to study the putative relationship of this effect with the r… Show more

“…The determination of the rate of gastric emptying was performed by serial tail vein blood sampling and the indirect method of acetaminophen blood measurements. Oliveira et al [36] reported delayed gastric emptying of a 1.5-g solid meal feed (nutrient content unspecified) in male SHR compared to male Wistar rats with a single time point measure of gastric emptying following sacrifice and weight of the solid gastric contents at 90 min. The comparison of the gastric emptying rate of SHR was not made with WKY but, instead, with Wistar rats which have a greater genetic divergence from SHR [37].…”
