Neck and waist circumference values according to sex, age, and body-mass index: Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)

Abstract: Body fat distribution predicts cardiovascular events better than body-mass index (BMI). Waist circumference (WC) and neck circumference (NC) are inexpensive anthropometric measurements. We aimed to present the conditional distribution of WC and NC values according to BMI, stratified by age and sex, from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) baseline data. We analyzed 15,085 ELSA-Brasil participants with complete data. We used spline quantile regression models, stratified by sex and age… Show more

“…Previous works have indicated that obesity may contribute to chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which can lead to prostate tissue remodeling and enlargement 38 . Given that WC increases with age, 39 it is difficult to identify the causal effect of WC on BPH in cross‐sectional studies. Wang et al undertook a two‐sample MR analysis of the effect of lifestyle on BPH and concluded that elevated WC increased the genetic liability for BPH, even after adjusting for BMI 22 .…”

“…There was no pubertal stage or maturation differentiation between the groups of children and adolescents The groups categorization by age were founded in evidence of different existing percentiles of anthropometric measurements by sex and age, as well as cut-off points to assess central obesity in children, adolescents, and adults. In fact, BMI and waist circumference show differences by age [27,28], tending to increase its values with age [29] and suggesting that mortality risk is also age related [30].…”

“…There is some controversy over the indication of using NC and its predictive role for body composition [ 21 , 22 ]. NC is simple, cheap, fast to measure, highly reproducible, and less-varied in age compared to WC [ 23 , 24 ]. It is more feasible in overcrowded clinics and more culturally accepted.…”
