Egocentric and allocentric spatial memory in healthy aging: performance on real-world tasks

Abstract: Although normal aging has been related to several cognitive difficulties, other processes have been studied less, such as spatial memory. Our aim was to compare egocentric and allocentric memory in an elderly population using ecological tasks. Twentyeight cognitively unimpaired participants performed Egocentric and Allocentric Spatial Memory Tasks, as well as Spatial Span from CANTAB, Benton's Judge of Line Orientation test (JoLO), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment test (MoCA). The results revealed that younge… Show more

“…This is an adaptation of the Egocentric Spatial Memory Tasks for adults (Fernandez‐Baizan et al, ; Fernandez‐Baizan et al, ), based on Hashimoto's test for head disorientation assessment (Hashimoto, Tanaka, & Nakano, ). It consists of a square template (90 × 90 cm) placed on the floor and divided into a matrix of nine small squares (3 × 3, 30 × 30 cm each).…”

“…Spatial orientation development starts early in childhood (see Fernandez‐Baizan, Arias, & Mendez, ; Fernandez‐Baizan, Arias, & Mendez, for a complete review). While the allocentric framework has been widely studied in normalized developed children in recent years, the egocentric orientation has received less attention (Fernandez‐Baizan, Diaz‐Caceres, Arias, & Mendez, ). It is difficult, based on the current spatial orientation assessment tests available, to compare between the two frameworks and to establish a course of improvement for these abilities.…”

“…For the spatial orientation assessment, we employed two tests: Egocentric and Allocentric Spatial Memory Tests [9,27], adapted to children (Fig. 1).…”

“…In contrast, the allocentric strategy requires the navigator to remember the spatial relationships between landmarks and form a cognitive map, which needs more cognitive load. Spatial memory task involving egocentric and allocentric strategy may be a sensitive tool to detect the cognitive decline during aging [ 12 ]. In age-related studies, previous studies have found the egocentric strategy is relatively preserved in older adults, while allocentric strategy and other strategies experience decline [ 2 , 9 , 13 , 14 ].…”
