Factors associated with the adequacy of gestational weight gain among Brazilian teenagers

Abstract: The scope of this article is to evaluate the adequacy of total gestational weight gain (GWG) according to maternal characteristics of Brazilian adolescents. It involved a cross-sectional, hospital-based study. A total of 3,904 teenagers with a single fetus gestation and gestational age (GA) at birth ≥ 37 weeks were included. A hierarchical model was built to analyze the dependent and independent variables adequacy of GWG: sociodemographic, care, obstetric and behavioral characteristics. The chances of insuffic… Show more

“…This highlights that there is currently a higher probability in pregnant adolescents of not meeting the recommendations GWG of the IOM. This is similar to the findings of Santos et al in adolescent Brazilians, which showed 37% and 33% insufficient and excessive GWG, respectively [ 57 ]. A significant rate of insufficient and excessive GWG was observed in our sample of pregnant adolescents.…”

“…There was a predominance of pregnant women who self-reported as mixed, black and yellow skin color In order to verify the factors associated with overweight/obesity in pregnant women, a hierarchical conceptual theoretical model (Figure 1) was developed, as described in a previous study, 22 with adaptations, and in a research with associations of overweight/obesity in pregnant women. 2,3 The variables that composed the socioeconomic and demographic, obstetric, social and family support/support characteristics, in addition to emotional aspects and comorbidities, were considered as independent variables divided into blocks in a theoretical model hypothesized for this study.…”
