Objective: to analyze demographic and clinical variables as predictors of cognitive disorders in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Method: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out at the Pro-Parkinson Program of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Pernambuco. The instruments used were the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson’s disease - Cognition (SCOPA-COG), the Hoehn & Yahr Staging Scale (HY), the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale part 3 (UPDRS-III), and the 15-item Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). A multiple linear regression model was used for the predictive outcome and the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the elderly and the non-elderly groups. Results: the sociodemographic data of 85 people were collected and the participants underwent a cognitive profile evaluation (MMSE and SCOPA-COG) and clinical evaluation (HY, UPDRS-III, GDS-15). Multiple regression analysis found significant results for age, work activity, and tremor index, explaining 59% of the variability of SCOPA-COG. There was an inverse correlation with age and work activity and a direct correlation with tremors. The SCOPA-COG and MEEM scores were significantly lower in elderly patients, with an emphasis on executive functions. Conclusion: the predictors of cognitive impairment were age, work activity, and tremors. Cognitive impairment was greater in elderly patients with PD, especially for executive functions.

OBJECTIVE To investigate macroregional variations in cognitive function in a national sample representative of the Brazilian population aged 50 years and older.METHODS Data from the baseline of the Longitudinal Study of Brazilian Elderly (ELSI-Brazil), collected between 2015 and 2016, were used. Memory was measured by means of a 10-word list and executive function, by semantic verbal fluency, based on the naming of animals. Gender, age, education, and rural or urban residence were potentially confoundingRESULTS Among the 9,412 ELSI-Brazil participants, 9,085 were included in the analysis; 53.9% were women and the average age was 63.0 (0.42) years. After adjusting for potential confounding variables, average scores for memory and verbal fluency were lower in the Northeast region and higher in the Midwest and Southeast, respectively. In the South region, higher scores were found for immediate and combined memory. In all regions, older participants and those with lower schooling had worse scores for memory and verbal fluency.CONCLUSIONS There are differences in cognitive function among older adults in the different macroregions, independent of age, gender, schooling, and rural or urban residence.

Resumo Com o objetivo de efetuar o rastreio do perfil cognitivo dos residentes em Estruturas Para Idosos no Concelho de Miranda do Corvo, avaliaram-se 174 participantes recorrendo ao Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) (n=96) e ao diagnóstico de demência reportado nos prontuários dos pacientes (n=78). Verificou-se, através do MMSE, que 41,7% dos inquiridos apresentavam pontuações sugestivas de déficit cognitivo. Adicionando a este resultado o diagnóstico de demência reportado nos prontuários dos pacientes, a percentagem subiu para 67,8% (n=118). A comparação dos nossos resultados com os obtidos a nível nacional revelou que essa percentagem foi significativamente superior (p<0,001). A escolaridade foi um fator preditivo da pontuação do MMSE (p=0,001). Conclui-se que a elevada prevalência de suspeita de déficit cognitivo e de demência revelada no nosso estudo deve remeter para a reflexão sobre a adequação dos cuidados prestados e sobre a ausência/escassez de programas de estimulação cognitiva nas estruturas residenciais para idosos. Nesse sentido, torna-se imperativo implementar avaliação cognitiva regular e instituir programas de intervenção que promovam a conservação e melhoria do funcionamento cognitivo em pessoas idosas institucionalizadas de zonas desfavorecidas.
