Qualitative menu labelling can be defined as descriptive or non-numerical interpretive labels (e.g. traffic light labelling, healthy food symbols, messages or ingredient lists). Qualitative information seems to have a positive influence on consumers' food choices, particularly in institutional food service establishments, such as in universities. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the influence of different formats of qualitative menu labelling on food choices in university restaurants. This systematic review was guided by the Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Synthesis Without Meta-Analysis (SWiM) and conducted vote counting of studies based on the direction of effect. Studies were retrieved from Cochrane Library, Scopus, MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO and Web of Science databases and reference lists of selected articles. Experimental and quasi-experimental studies were included. Two independent researchers searched and extracted the data and assessed the methodological quality using the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies. From the initial search (460 records), four papers were selected, plus one paper identified in a previous study and a further six from an update search, totalling 11 included studies, reporting 14 different interventions (n = 499 174). Types of interventions included the use of symbols and the inclusion of traffic light labelling. Outcomes of interest were food choice, expressed as mean, median or percent healthy food choices or purchases. Qualitative menu labels increased healthy food choices and/or purchase behaviour, with 10 of 12 interventions favouring the intervention (83%; 95%CI 55-95%; p = 0.0386). Most of the studies favouring the intervention used healthy food symbols for healthier foods or food components, alone or in association with another intervention and were of moderate and weak quality. These findings may serve as a basis for the implementation of nutrition information policies in university restaurants.

Interventions based on environmental determinants for nutritional and physical activity behaviours in Colombia: a scoping review

ObjectiveTo identify, systematically, the interventions based on environmental determinants to improve the nutritional and physical activity (PA) habits available in Colombia.DesignA scoping review was performed according to the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute.Study selectionAll studies about intervention programmes for PA and nutritional behaviours in Colombia were included.MethodsSearches in Medline/PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Scielo and Lilacs, using MeSH, Decs and Emtree terms, were performed up to August 2020. Additionally, a manual search was made in specialised national journals. An internet documentary search of the official websites on policies and programmes by departmental, district and municipal secretariats was also performed.Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts. Then, the full texts were reviewed to select documents to be included.Data management relevant information from selected documents and articles was extracted. A descriptive analysis was considered.ResultsSixty-seven documents and 70 published articles were found. The programmes were identified in 13 initiatives, 7 in the area of PA and 6 with a nutrition focus. They were on physical and social environmental modifications such as the ‘muévete’ (‘get moving’) programmes in Bogota, Quindio and Cartagena; a modification of ‘ciclovía’; or bicycle path programmes as well as nutrition programmes in schools, universities and companies.ConclusionThis scoping review identified national programmes and policies in Colombia in the area of nutrition and PA from the environmental perspective in different scenarios: from schools to workplaces and communities. The need to implement such programmes from public and private institutions is also noted, promoting the practice of PA and healthy eating in every scenario in the national territory. New research to determine the impact of these programmes is essential to get a glimpse of the effects of these programmes and the implications for public health.

Introducción: La alimentación fuera de casa se ha identificado como uno de los factores que contribuye a la aparición de enfermedades no transmisibles, lo que constituye un problema de salud pública mundial. En este contexto, el presente estudio exploró cómo los restaurantes promocionan alimentación saludable.Material y métodos: La investigación fue de tipo cualitativo con un diseño basado en el estudio de casos. Se incluyeron 68 establecimientos pertenecientes al Top 100 de restaurantes con mayores ventas en Colombia, ubicados en la ciudad capital. Se realizó observación y revisión documental de contenidos dispuestos por dichos restaurantes en su página web, redes sociales oficiales y menú web entre abril de 2016 y febrero de 2017. El análisis de la información fue realizado para atributos en Epiinfo 7.2 y para información categorizada con el programa Nvivo 11.0Resultados: De los 68 restaurantes, ocho declararon el desarrollo de acciones de alimentación saludable como parte de su concepto de negocio; no obstante, otros 25 establecimientos también emprendieron acciones en el tema. En mayor medida, se encontró que los restaurantes promocionan alimentación saludable por medio de la oferta de verduras, o por medio de mensajes, en redes sociales, promocionando sus platos saludables.Conclusiones: Sería beneficioso una aproximación más integral en referencia a la promoción de alimentación saludable en restaurantes. Esto no solo en términos de la oferta, sino también de aquellos mecanismos que persuaden elecciones saludables. Al explorar fueron escasos lo resultados sobre estrategias de precios, campañas o información nutricional. Los resultados expuestos son un aporte al reconocimiento de las características de los ambientes alimentarios colombianos, dada la escasa información al respecto y la necesidad de trabajo en este tema con el sector de la restauración.
