Burden of Mild Mental Retardation attributed to prenatal methylmercury exposure in Amazon: local and regional estimates

Abstract: The gold rush in the Amazon Region caused an increase of mercury (Hg) levels in the environment, and, consequently, raised human exposure. Once released into aquatic systems, Hg could generate methylmercury (MeHg), an extremely toxic compound, which is accumulated through trophic chains. Several studies have provided evidences of the brain sensitivity to MeHg, as well as, of the fetus vulnerability during pregnancy. The main objective of this study was to estimate the Mild Mental Retardation (MMR) in Amazonian… Show more

“…Once ingested through contaminated food, the digestive tract easily absorbs MeHg and it reaches the bloodstream, affecting various tissues in the human body, including the nervous system, due to its highly lipophilic nature [33]. In pregnant women, MeHg has the capacity to cross the placental barrier and to contaminate breast milk, exposing both fetuses and infants to this toxic compound [34,35].…”

“…Women's MeHg exposure during pregnancy can cause severe damage to the fetus's central nervous system, and some of these damages can be irreversible. Studies have associated prenatal MeHg exposure with cognitive delays and mild mental retardation [6,54,55]. Reuben et al [56] observed loss of cognitive ability in ASGM mercury-exposed children in the Peruvian Amazon.…”

“…Ingested methylmercury is rapidly absorbed by the human gastrointestinal tract, principally affecting the central nervous and cardiovascular systems [28][29][30]. This mercurial form is especially harmful to pregnant women because the fetal brain is more sensitive to the action of methylmercury, causing many neurodevelopment problems to occur, including mental retardation, learning delays, visual and auditory alterations, and other harmful effects [31][32][33].…”
