Trends in Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate trends in publications on unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) from the past to the present. Methods: As a web-based analysis, all UKA research articles, editorial letters, case reports, reviews and meeting abstracts published on the Thomson Reuters’ Web of Knowledge were evaluated. The period from the first publication in 1980 to January 2019 was divided into four decades and publications were evaluated. Research articles were grouped into headings according to the subjects. “…Innovation in prosthesis design and implantation has long been the norm in arthroplasty. In recent years, numerous new UKA technologies, such as customized implantation, have been developed and are becoming increasingly reported in the literature [ 36 ]. Though C-UKA has demonstrated favorable characteristics, such as improved component fit [ 25 , 26 ] and reduced opposite compartment contact stress [ 27 ], its clinical outcomes have yet to be established at mid- or long-term follow-up.…”

“…A review of the literature reveals no prior bibliographic analysis regarding the research surrounding UKA. A recent article 'Trends in Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty' attempts to evaluate the trends in the available literature on UKA, but this study is not a bibliometric analysis and does not evaluate the quality of the data available or identify influential articles on the topic [5]. Given the rising interest in UKA, the goal of this review is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of UKA to identify the 50 most prominent studies discussing UKA.…”

“…The end-stage knee osteoarthritis is usually restricted to one compartment, it can thus be treated through the unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). [ 1 , 2 ] In the wake of the aging of the US population, the number of knee arthroplasty is expected to obviously increase by 2030, with the estimated 3.48 million cases each year. [ 3 , 4 ] Although UKA recovers faster than total knee arthroplasty, with better function and fewer complications, it is related to serious postoperative pain.…”
