SHUEE on the evaluation of upper limb in cerebral palsy

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the use of the tool for evaluation of spastic upper limb SHUEE (Shriners Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation) in the evaluation of upper limb in cerebral palsy (CP) and its ability to detect changes after surgical treatment of identified deformities. METHODS: 19 patients with spastic hemiplegic CP had their upper limb evaluated by SHUEE. Five patients underwent surgical treatment of deformities detected and performed the test at one year postoperatively. RESULTS: The mean age was 9.02… Show more

“…SHUEE has been used in Brazil and seems to help in clinical reasoning and decision-making process, besides enabling the formal measurement of the results of the therapies employed. 9,25,27 The fact that the sample calculation was estimated from the analysis of convergent validity and based on the original study of SHUEE may constitute a limitation of this study. However, no previous studies have calculated the α-C for SHUEE, which would enable the sample calculation based on this item.…”

“…SHUEE proposes combining this usual evaluation with a video-based assessment that covers the functional analysis and the positioning of the segments during the activity. From this perspective, SHUEE has been used in the literature to demonstrate the results after surgical 24,25 and conservative treatments, such as the use of BTX-A 24 and Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy, 26 in children and adolescents with unilateral CP. SHUEE has been used in Brazil and seems to help in clinical reasoning and decision-making process, besides enabling the formal measurement of the results of the therapies employed.…”

“…Despite having proved their validity in assessing UL motor function, these scoring systems are still considered a descriptive and subjective evaluation. Moreover, these scoring systems rely on the clinicians' expertise, leading to non-consideration of pathological mechanisms, limited accuracy and an underestimation of child's actual performance [15][16][17].…”
