Analysis of quartz floatability using design of experiments

Abstract: Quartz floatability in cationic reverse flotation depends on the suitable choice of surfactant type and the conditions under which they are applied. The design of experiments (DOE) allows the evaluation of process variables, in a structured and independent way, with statistical validation and a limited number of tests. Tests of microflotation of quartz, in the size range-150 +75 µm, using factorial design of experiments, showed that etherdiamine leads to higher level of quartz floatability than ethermonoamine,… Show more

“…Normally, the increase in collector dosage enhances the quartz floatability, as shown by ethermonoamine in Figure 4. Etherdiamine yielded higher values of quartz floatability at 1 mg/L, replicat-ing the results found by Matos et al, (2019). Surprisingly, the results also show that the binary mixture 1:1 produced higher quartz floatability than each etheramine individually, clearly demonstrating the synergistic effect occurrence.…”

“…In tests using depressant solution, the mineral was initially conditioned for 5 minutes. The conditioning time of the collector and the flotation time was 1 min in each stage, following the procedure described by Matos et al, (2019). Nitrogen gas (60mL/min) was used for generating bubbles.…”

“…Scientific studies in the field of experimentation promotes great technological advances in order to optimize processes and generate more reliable results based on statistical tools, while minimizing the process time [20]. In this context, the increasingly frequent use of design of experiments (DOE) with mixtures stands out, which through mathematical and statistical tools, allows the simulation and optimization of experiments, being able to reduce their quantity and obtain better experimental answers in more efficient way [21,22]. Through DOE, it is possible to verify how the properties of interest are affected by the variation of the proportions of the mixture components as well as to analyze which component has the greatest influence on the response variable [23,24].…”

“…This reuse is possible through technological characterization, which in turn is an essential step for optimum use of mineral resources. It is a specialized branch applied to mineral processing that studies specific aspects of the mineralogy of samples, and the information obtained is used for the development and optimization of the processes (Gomes et al, 2011;Jones & Boger, 2012;Castro & Peres, 2013;Edraki et al, 2014;Kinnunen & Kaksonen, 2019;Matos et al, 2019;Pinto & Delboni Júnior, 2019;Tayebi-Krorami et al, 2019;Chácara & Oliveira Filho, 2021).…”
