Geophysical investigation of earth dam using the electrical tomography resistivity technique

Abstract: Dams are structures that dam rivers and streams for a variety of purposes. These structures often need to be sturdy to withstand the force of the impoundment and the high values of accumulated water load. The constant maintenance of these structures is essential, since a possible accident can lead to damage of catastrophic proportions. This research presents an alternative cheap and quick application for investigating water seepage in earth dams, through the application of the DC resistivity geophysical method… Show more

“…This process was developed on the Oasis Montaj platform, where the 2D data obtained in the Res-2Dinv program were interpolated to generate 2D visualization models by means of the method of minimum curvature, in addition to the adjustment of surface of isovalues. This procedure is described in several studies of combined use of Geoelectric methods (Moreira and Ilha, 2011;Helene et al, 2016;Camarero and Moreira 2017;Casagrande et al, 2018, Cavallari et al, 2018.…”

“…Negative SP values appear in the region of the downstream slope and develop upstream, as shown in the scheme of Figure 7. It is not the focus of this research, but electrical resistivity surveys in this same dam showed high values of electrical conductivity at this point, identifying a possible water saturation zone (Camarero, 2017).…”

“…The 2D inversion models were exported from Res2dinv and imported into Oasis Montaj software developed by Geosoft aiming to create a 3D visualization model with adjustment of topographic data. These 3D visualization models facilitate the understanding of complex geological structures associated to the modeling of mineral deposits and to hydrological problems, such as flow of contaminants (Zanchi et al, 2009;Aizebeokhai et al, 2011;Moreira et al, 2012, Camarero and Moreira, 2017.…”
