Study of the effect of diatomite on physico-mechanical properties of concrete

Abstract: Concretes present great potential to be used in many areas of civil construction. Their properties can be improved by substitution or addition of alternative materials to the Portland cement. The diatomite is a sedimentary material composed mainly by silica and amorphous impurities, presenting very fine particle size, high porosity, and low specific mass. Concrete was produced in a ratio of 1:1:2 (cement: sand: gravel) with the addition of diatomite at contents of 5% and 10% by cement weight and a water/cement… Show more

“…However, the mortars that had been amended with 15% calcined diatomite powder showed the best mechanical characteristics both at low and high temperatures [ 45 ]. The optimal percentage of diatomite replacement for cement, according to Macedo et al [ 46 ], was determined to be 10%, since better results were yielded indicating that diatomite has a good potential as a partial substitute for cement in concrete construction.…”

“…Diatomite is made up of cylindrical particles with a square cell structure and a surface covered with micropores, which explains its high porosity and low density [ 46 ]. It has unique engineering properties including a high specific surface area, low dry density, high friction angle, high compressibility, and an unstable response under dynamic loads [ 127 ].…”

“…On the one hand, a significant DOI No. : http://doi.org/10.53550/EEC.2022.v28i02.065 increase in compressive strength has been found (Stamatakis, et al, 2003;Macedo, et al, 2020). In cement pastes, Stamatakis et al (2003) indicated that 15% diatomite increase the compressive strength by 19.6%, whereas, Fragoulis et al (1997) reported that 10% diatomite increase the strength by 11.6%.…”

“…In mortar, Pokony et al (2019) have found that 20% diatomite can developed the compressive strength of mortar by 14%. In concrete, Pokony et al (2016) and Macedo et al (2020) have found that the concrete containing until 10% diatomite has a higher compressive strength than concrete without diatomite. On the other hand, significant reduce in compressive strength has been reported.…”

“…Assim, é essencial que haja maneiras de diminuir o impacto ambiental, como por exemplo, a incorporação de rejeitos em substituição parcial da argila (Monteiro, et al, 2005). Dessa maneira, o uso de recursos naturais que apresentam propriedades pozolânicas ganhou grande importância na indústria da construção civil (Macedo, et al, 2020). Na fabricação de tijolos cerâmicos maciços, a adição de aditivos minerais ativos, em substituição a argila é de grande significado científico.…”
