“…In our study, however, we observed that instead of increased root growth, yerba mate demonstrated a stagnated growth in both its shoots and roots when subjected to a water de cit. Similar results were obtained by Gortari et al (2020) after subjecting yerba mate seedlings and mini-cuttings to simulated drought periods.…”

“…Although we observed a reduced growth and symptoms of water stress in seedlings subjected to a lower water availability, the treatments used in our study and the duration for which seedlings were subjected to this water availability (60 days) were insu cient to cause plant death. Decreased growth in plants subjected to water de cit has been widely demonstrated for arboreal species and has also been observed in other yerba mate genotypes (Gortari et al 2020). In the latter study, water de cits reduced plant height, and both seedlings and mini-cuttings responded similarly to water de cit after 50 days.…”

“…(Aquifoliaceae) are normally consumed as an infusion called "mate" or "chimarrão" in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay (Pereira Croge et al 2021). The industry of yerba mate deeply influences the economy of the producer regions of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, which harbor about 160,000, 85,000 and 35,000 ha of this crop, respectively (Gortari et al 2020), amounting a production of more than 900,000 tons in 2016 (Pereira Croge et al 2021).…”

“…As a whole, our study suggests that the 140 DNAJs characterized of yerba mate are potentially responsive genes to cope with the well-known major stresses that persistently affect this crop in the context of an universal full-Rodriguésia 74: e00492022. 2023 sun monoculture practice, such as those abiotic (Rakocevic et al 2008;Gortari et al 2019Gortari et al , 2020Salas et al 2019), biotic (Sosa et al 2011;Rybak et al 2014;Bejerman et al 2017;Bergottini et al 2017) and mechanical (Kurtz et al 2014) shocks. We hypothesize that the large repertoire of DNAJ genes and these cis-acting regulatory elements are concomitant to the survival of the yerba mate plant during those multiple stresses.…”
