Study of Kinematic Viscosity, Volatility and Ignition Quality Properties of Butanol/Diesel Blends

Abstract: The alternative use of butanol in blends with diesel has attracted the attention of many researchers worldwide for its possibility to overcome some barriers observed for other lower chain alcohols. Viscosity, volatility and ignition quality are critical characteristics of a fuel intended for use in compression ignition engines. In this paper, the kinematic viscosity, atmospheric distillation and cetane number of butanol/diesel blends in proportions of up to 30 mass% were determined and compared with Brazilian … Show more

“…Simultaneously, the use of diesel engines in industry and transport, especially on the road, continues to grow [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. For decades, vegetable oil esters have been added to diesel fuel in these types of engines; more recently, there has been increased interest in using various alcohols as fuel additives [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Ethanol is a particular focus in this area of research because it can be produced from plants and can therefore be considered a fully renewable fuel [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…There is a statistically significant difference between viscosities ( p -value = 3 × 10 −4 ); the data are normally distributed ( p -value = 0.410). In comparison to [ 76 , 78 ], kinematic viscosity has same slowly declining trend.…”

“…More importantly, its volatility and higher flash point made it easy to integrate with the fuel system in internal combustion engines. Furthermore, the viscosity and density of butanol are close to that of diesel fuel, thus meeting the requirements of fuel economy as well as lubricity (Brandão and Suarez, 2018). With higher heat value and lower vaporization calorific value than isopropanol and ethanol, resulting in better flammability.…”
