Synthesis and Characterization O F Sodium Methyl Ester Sulfonate for Chemically-Enhanced Oil Recovery

Abstract: Attention has been given to reduce the cost of surfactant by using castor oil as an alternative natural source of feedstock. A new surfactant, sodium methyl ester sulfonate (SMES) was synthesised using ricinoleic acid methyl ester, which is obtained from castor oil, for enhanced oil recovery in petroleum industries. The performance of SMES was studied by measuring the surface tension with and without sodium chloride and its thermal stability at reservoir temperature. SMES exhibited good surface activity, reduc… Show more

“…While the mole ratio of 1:0,5, sulfuric acid as sulfonation agent used is not optimal, so iodine value is still high. The highest number of iodine on TM (without methanol) indicates that there are still many reactants that do not react [6,8,18]. In Figure 2, ester value is an indicator of the ester compound.…”

“…On the other hand, the ester value increased with sulfonation reactions. Increasing ester value occurred because of extension chain of reactive carboxyl from PDO [17], it will react with the base which means the residual acid in the anionic surfactant product is reduced [6,8,18]. Babu in his study made sodium methyl ester sulfonate from ricinoleic acid, with the result of acid value, saponification value and iodine value are 10-12, 185-190, and 80-90 respectively.…”

“…Thus, a less hazardous and cost-effective but high performance surfactant formulation for an efficient oil recovery is required. These have led to interest in green and cost-effective processes for the manufacturing of commercial surfactants from sustainable feedstock [21]. Bio-based surfactants, due to their biodegradability and lower critical micelle concentration [22] are therefore becoming more attractive for the application in the petroleum industry [12].…”

“…Introduction α-sulfonated methyl ester (α-SME) is an oleochemicalbased anionic surfactant derived from natural fats and oil resources including tallow, soya, palm oil (Ahmad et al, 1998;Xie et al, 2013), castor oil (Babu et al, 2015;Meshram et al, 2015), and coconut oil. It is made from renewable natural resources and has excellent biodegradability (Ghazali and Ahmad, 2004;Ishak et al, 2016;Masuda et al, 1993Masuda et al, , 1993b.…”
