Thermo stabilisation of poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)

Abstract: SbstractPoly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) -PBAT is a synthetic biodegradable polymer commonly used for plastic film production from neat polymer or nanocomposites. The PBAT is submitted to high temperatures and shear rate during its processing. In the present study, the thermo stabilisation of PBAT by the addition of two types of stabilisers was studied using a torque rheometer at 60 rpm and two levels of temperature. The stabilisers were used as master batches with a percentage of 10% by weight of addi… Show more

“…The degradation during the processing of PBAT occurs via hydrolysis of the ester bond through a predominant mechanism of chain breakage and β-C-H hydrogen transfer. The process cannot be stopped by using a stabilizer, with drying being a safe way to control the destruction [ 46 ]. The presence of starch in the studied compounds increases the biodegradation rate by intensifying the hydrolysis reactions for both PCL and PBAT [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ].…”

“…4 Furthermore, PBAT can be processed using conventional equipment such as mixers, extruders, and injection molding machines, rendering this polymer highly promising for various packaging applications. 5 However, PBAT biodegradability reduces its mechanical resistance, 6 leading to several disadvantages in its use. The oxidative chain scission during storage and after processing determines PBAT degradation.…”

“…32 Moreover, synthetic antioxidants are used to improve the thermo-oxidative stability of PBAT, which mainly act on the deactivation of free radicals. 33 Based on the concept of environmental conservation and sustainable development, natural antioxidants have been considered as a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic ones. Several works have been reported on the antioxidant modification of PBAT by natural substances.…”

“…The addition of chain extenders can achieve equilibrium in degradation, chain extension, and branching, thereby enhancing the thermal stability of PBAT 32 . Moreover, synthetic antioxidants are used to improve the thermo‐oxidative stability of PBAT, which mainly act on the deactivation of free radicals 33 …”
