Effects of polypropylene methyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes and polypropylene-grafted maleic anhydride compatibilizers on the properties of palm kernel shell reinforced polypropylene biocomposites

Abstract: SbstractThe effects of the polypropylene-grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH) and polypropylene methyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PP-POSS) compatibilizers on the mechanical, thermal and physical properties of palm kernel shell (PKS) reinforced polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The production of PP/PKS biocomposites was performed by melt mixing using Brabender Internal Mixer. Mechanical test results showed that the biocomposites with PP-g-MAH have better tensile strength compared to biocomposites … Show more

“…In this experimental work, an isotactic polypropylene (0.5mm film, ρ =0.905 g/cm 3 ) reinforced with novel plain weave ( Figure 2) glass fabric (265 g/m 2 , ρ =2.54 g/cm 3 , f v =19%) thermoplastic composite fabricated through hot compression molding using film stacking approach was used for the stamp forming process [21] . The (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxy silane and polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride [22] were used as the silane coupling agent and matrix compatibilizer, respectively for the purpose of improving the adhesion between the matrix and reinforcement.…”

“…The same shows 62% enhancement in tensile strength match up to pure PP. The presence of compatibilizer enhances the dispersal of graphene in the base PP matrix [9,10,20] . However with increase in filler content beyond 5 wt.-% for PMG5, the tensile strength starts to decrease.…”

“…COOH-Gr is highly polar and PP is nonpolar, mismatch occurs during nanocomposite production. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA-g-PP) is the compatibilizer used to further increase the interaction among the fillers and the matrix [9,10] . This is possible because of the polar to polar interaction between the compatibilizer and COOH-Gr.…”

“…Compatibilizers can stabilize the blend morphology by reducing the interfacial tension thereby improving the interfacial affinity of the polymer components by acting as surfactant or emulsifying agent. There are different types of compatibilizers with specified interactions such as polypropylene‐grafted‐maleic anhyride (PP‐g‐MAH), poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) (PEGMA), polypropylene‐grafted‐acrylic acid (PP‐g‐AA), polypropylene methyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (PP‐POSS), isocyanate group etc …”
