Nanofibers of gelatin and polivinyl-alcohol-chitosan for wound dressing application: fabrication and characterization

Abstract: Electrospun nanofibers from gelatin (G), chitosan (CS), and chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (CS-PVA) were developed by electrospinning process. Mechanical properties were determined by the tensile test, the elastic modulus values of the nanofibers were G (15.418-34.34 MPa) and . The morphological characterization by SEM revealed that the systems with 15% G and 6% CS-PVA showed morphological homogeneity. Structural characterization by FTIR indicated an interaction among some functional groups of the component. Therm… Show more

“…Even though the hydrophobic behavior of CH films has been reported in other works, with WCAs > 88 • [79,80], the blending with PVA, with very hydrophilic nature and WCAs < 10 • [81], affects the wettability of the nanolayer produced. Furthermore, the decrease in the WCA with increasing PVA content in a PVA_CH blend has been previously described [79,82].…”

“…[ 60 ] The PVA nanofibrous web was the smallest contact angle because of the existence of OH groups. [ 20,60 ] The contact angle of nanofibrous webs was reduced by decreasing the chitosan:gelatin ratios from 75:25 to 25:75, which attributed to the highly hydrophilic nature of gelatin as well as the relatively hydrophobic nature of chitosan. “…In our study, granulation gradually increased at the respective time points in both groups and decreased in necrotic tissue development across the time points. Thus, both dressings enhanced wound repair while providing moisture and protection to the wound via properties such as antibacterial 42 and angiogenic properties. 11 12 43 44 45 Another study showed that chitosan gel augmented the synthesis levels of collagen, an endogenous antioxidant, and prevented free radical-mediated tissue injury.…”
