Sulfonation degree effect on ion-conducting SPEEK-titanium oxide membranes properties

Abstract: Polymeric membranes were developed using a SPEEK (sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)) polymer matrix, containing titanium oxide (TiO 2) (incorporated by sol-gel method). SPEEK with different sulfonation degrees (SD): 63% and 50% were used. The influence of sulfonation degree on membrane properties was investigated. The thermal analysis (TGA and DTGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were carried out to characterize the membranes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was carried out to evaluate the proto… Show more

“…It is an equivalent electrical circuit that consists of an active electrolyte resistance ( R S ) in series with the parallel combination of an active charge transfer resistance ( R z ), the double-layer capacitance ( C ) and Warburg impedance ( W ). 60 From the spectra it can be seen that the impedance and frequency are inversely related (Fig. 5), i.e.…”

“…This could be attributed to the formation of ion clusters between the sulfonic groups of SPEEK and the sulfonic groups on the cavities of SSNW-1, which favors the transmission of protons . However, the composite membranes with 4 and 5 wt % SSNW-1 content presented higher AR than those with 3 wt %, probably due to the aggregation of SSNW-1, which blocks the proton transport pathway …”

“…34 However, the composite membranes with 4 and 5 wt % SSNW-1 content presented higher AR than those with 3 wt %, probably due to the aggregation of SSNW-1, which blocks the proton transport pathway. 35 The morphologies of the composite membranes were investigated using SEM. As shown in Figure 2a, the pure SPEEK membrane showed a smooth and compact surface, whereas the SPEEK/SSNW-5% composite membrane exhibited a rough surface morphology with evident agglomeration (Figure 2c).…”

“…SPEEK/TC and SPEEK/TNC hybrid membranes show better methanol rejection, antiswelling properties, and thermal stability than pure SPEEK membranes due to electrostatic interactions between SPEEK and inorganic nanoparticles. Marrero et al 52 has synthesized membranes based on SPEEK (with SD = 63% and 50%) and titanium oxide using the sol-gel process. The ion exchange capacity increases with increasing SD.…”
