Objective: to know the prevalence and factors associated with frailty in elderly assisted by the Centro Mais Vida de Referência em Assistência à Saúde do Idoso (Mais Vida Health Reference Center for the Elderly) in the North of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Method: cross-sectional study, with sampling by convenience. Data collection occurred in 2015. Demographic and socioeconomic variables, morbidities, use of health services and the score of the Edmonton Frail Scale were analyzed. The adjusted prevalence ratios were obtained by multiple analysis of Poisson regression with robust variance. Results: 360 elderly aged 65 or older were evaluated. Frailty prevalence was 47.2%. The variables associated with frailty were the following: advanced age elderly, who live without a partner, have a caregiver, present depressive symptoms, osteoarticular disease, as well as history of hospitalization and falls in the last twelve months. Conclusion: knowledge of factors associated with frailty allows development of health actions aimed at the elderly. RESUMO Objetivo: conhecer a prevalência e fatores associados à fragilidade em idosos assistidos pelo Centro Mais Vida de Referência em Assistência à Saúde do Idoso ao norte de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Método: estudo transversal, com amostragem por conveniência. A coleta de dados ocorreu em 2015. Analisaram-se variáveis demográfi cas e socioeconômicas, morbidades, utilização de serviços de saúde e o escore da Escala de Fragilidade de Edmonton. As razões de prevalências ajustadas foram obtidas por análise múltipla de regressão de Poisson com variância robusta. Resultados: foram avaliados 360 idosos com idade igual ou superior a 65 anos. A prevalência de fragilidade foi 47,2%. As variáveis associadas à fragilidade foram: idosos longevos, que vivem sem companheiro(a), possuem cuidador, apresentam sintomas depressivos, doença osteoarticular, bem como história de internação e de quedas nos últimos 12 meses. Conclusão: o conhecimento dos fatores associados à fragilidade permite que ações de saúde destinadas a idosos possam ser desenvolvidas. Objective:investigating the association between frailty syndrome and sociodemographic characteristics in long-lived individuals of a community. Method:a cross-sectional study with a proportional stratified sample consisting of 243 long-lived individuals. A structured instrument, scales and tests that comprise evaluating frailty were applied for data collection. Univariate and multivariate analyzes were performed by logistic regression (p<0.05) by Statistica 10(r) software and Odds Ratio (95% Confidence Interval) were calculated for the predictive models. Results:of the 243 long-lived individuals evaluated, 36 (14.8%) were frail, 55 (63.8%) were pre-frail and 52 (21.4%) were not frail. A predominance of females (n=161; 66.3%), widows/widowers (n=158; 65%), who lived with family members (n=144; 59.3%) and in a self-reported satisfactory financial situation (n=108; 44.5%) was observed. A significant association was found between the demographic variable of age (p=0.043) and frailty syndrome. The best predictor model for the syndrome included the variables: gender, age and household companion. Conclusion:the variable of age contributed most to the fragilization process of long-lived individuals residing in the community. It is essential that gerontological nursing care contemplates early detection of this syndrome, considering age as being indicative of care needs.

Fragilidade e fatores de risco associados em pessoas idosas independentes residentes em meio ruralFrailty and associated risk factors in independent older people living in rural areas Fragilidad y factores de riesgo asociados en personas ancianas independientes residentes en el medio rural AbstractBackground: The diagnosis of the frailty syndrome is essential in the planning of elderly health interventions. Objective: To assess the prevalence of frailty among older people living in rural communities and its associated factors. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 435 elderly subjects who were classified according to the frailty phenotype. The following instruments were also applied: Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), Barthel Index (BI), and Lawton And Brody Instrumental Activities Of Daily Living (IADL) Scale. Association tests, mean comparison tests, and correlation analysis (p < 0.05) were used. Results: The sample (74.3 ± 7.1 years) was predominantly female (62.3%) and showed prevalence rates of 33.3% for non-frailty, 46.2% for pre-frailty, and 20.5% for frailty. Frailty was associated with self-perceived health, pain intensity, use of walking aids, and sensory problems. Frail older people were more dependent on activities of daily living. Conclusion: Stronger correlations were found between frailty and the CCI and ELB scores, age, and number of medications per day, in this order.
