Rhinitis in goat by Exserohilum rostratum (Setosphaeria rostrata)

Abstract: We described a case of rhinitis case caused by Exserohilum rostratum in a 3-year-old, mixed breed, afemale goat, presenting with decreased appetite, dyspnea, and face deformity, with evolution of approximately 2 months. Necropsy revealed an extensive brownish yellow, irregular, ulcerated, and friable focal lesion in the nasal cavity. Purulent secretion drained from the lesion, affecting the nasal vestibule and extending the caudal portion of the dorsal concha, associated with nasal meatus obstruction, destruct… Show more

“…infection in cattle, including the presence of a Splendore-Hoeppli 9,13,16 reaction and hyphae within giant cells, macrophage, or free in tissues. 1,3,9,12,13,16 Eosinophils have also been observed in lesions associated with these fungi in cattle. 9,12,13,16 Although a few fungal elements were pigmented in the H&E sections that we examined, the use of unstained sections and FM stain were very useful in demonstrating pigment.…”

“…4 Exserohilum rostratum , a dematiaceous fungus, plant pathogen, and cause of an outbreak of fungal meningitis in people associated with contaminated methylprednisolone injections, 35 has been reported as a cause of rhinitis in a goat in Brazil. 6 As previously mentioned, there is a report of Conidiobolus facial mycosis in 2 goats from Brazil, 23 but none of basidiobolomycosis based on PubMed and Google searches. Systemic fungal infection tentatively identified as sterile fungi, a group of fungi without reproductive cells or conidia, that also involved the nasal cavity was reported in a Tur goat.…”
