Retrospective analysis of dog bites in Southern Italy

Abstract: Dog bite is one of the major public health problems involving people worldwide. Although, several studies have investigated this phenomenon in different countries, little information about the incidence of dog bite episodes in Italy is available. We analysed data about dog biting events between 2010 and 2019 provided by the CRIUV, the Regional Reference Centre for Veterinary Urban Hygiene in the largest city of Southern Italy, namely. Naples. We observed severe and profound inconsistencies in the data collecti… Show more

“…In keeping with these findings, we found a trend towards fearfulness of people in our enrolled dogs, which constitutes a further altered personality trait. Fear in dogs is an undesirable trait that can bring about abandonment, aggression and, in the worst-case scenario, pose threats to public health worldwide, thus necessitating euthanasia [ 52 , 53 ]. This is confirmed by Palestrini et al (2005), who showed that behavioral and physiological stress responses may also occur when dogs are handled by unfamiliar humans [ 54 ].…”

“…The high scores registered by the questionnaire for both aggression and fear would further confirm the presence of the disruptive/antisocial behavior of these dogs toward humans. An interesting hypothesis would be that the simultaneous presence of highly arousing emotional states in the dogs’ brain would create a sort of emotional “short-circuit” which would subsequently lead to the potential expression of antisocial aggressive behavior 27 , 28 . It would be of interest within future studies to investigate through the use of neuro-imaging techniques whether the corpus callosum in the brain of these dogs is smaller than normal, a phenomenon which would justify the lower inter-hemispheric communication that underlies other mental disorders reported in humans 29 .…”

“…However, aggressive interactions can be witnessed between a child and a dog. Dog bites are common injuries treated in pediatric departments of hospitals all over the world ( d’Angelo et al, 2022 ; Patterson et al, 2022 ). Children cruelty toward animal also exists and should be taken very seriously ( McDonald et al, 2018 ; Hawkins, Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals & Williams, 2020 ), especially in light of the literature linking animal cruelty and other forms of violence ( e.g ., Gullone & Robertson, 2008 ).…”
