Agro-industrial wastes as sources of bioactive compounds for food and fermentation industries

Abstract: Agro-industrial wastes are of great interest because they are important natural sources of bioactive compounds and can generate value-added byproducts. Recent studies have shown that byproducts generated by the food processing industry are rich in bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds, organic acids, and carotenoids, among others. The growing interest in replacing synthetic antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds with natural ones has stimulated a search for these bioactive compounds from plant sourc… Show more

“…Plant-determined bioactive compounds are being viewed as fascinating elements for the creation of biodegradable and bioactive films because of their usefulness and natural origin [7]. Plant extracts and fruit pulps as sources of bioactive compounds or isolated bioactive compounds in film-forming solutions have been demonstrated to have antioxidant and antibacterial effects on the subsequent films, prolonging their utility in bioactive and biodegradable films or packaging [2,3,24,62]. Plant derived naturally bioactive compounds are incorporated directly into agro-based polymers or the encapsulated plant-derived bioactive chemicals are integrated into the biopolymers by spraying during the production process [63].…”

“…Plant-derived bioactive compounds are being considered interesting ingredients for the production of biodegradable and bioactive films due to their natural origin and functionality [25]. Studies have shown that the incorporation of plant extracts and fruit pulps as sources of bioactive compounds or isolated bioactive compounds into film-forming solutions cause antioxidant and antimicrobial effects on the resulting films, extending their application in bioactive and biodegradable films or packaging [2,3,12,27,36,101]. Recently, Benbettaïeb et al [102] carried out an in-depth review on the mechanisms involved in the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of edible bioactive films for food applications.…”

“…Türkiye'de takviye edici gıda sektörünün giderek büyümesi sonucu ulusal ve uluslararası firmalar Türk pazarına gün geçtikçe artan sayıda gelişmiş takviye edici gıda ürünleri arz etmektedirler. Bunun yanı sıra Türkiye'nin pazarlama sektöründe takviye edici gıdaların tüketimi üzerine yapılan araştırma ve çalışmalar yeterli sayıda değildir (Sezgin, 2020).…”
