Economic losses due to the occurrence of cysticercosis in cattle from cities located in Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: Cysticercosis represents an important public health problem that can cause significant economic losses to the beef industry. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence rate of cysticercosis in cattle and estimate the economic losses to producers associated with this parasitic disease. Data were collected from the official sanitary inspection service of a slaughterhouse located in the city of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, southeast Brazil, from 2009 to 2016. A total of 358,383 cattle from 46 cities in Mina… Show more

“…From these articles, we identified two articles [11,26] describing BCC prevalence in several Brazilian states, covering a long period and including a large sample size. In addition, we found 12 articles containing information about the spatial distribution of BCC inside/within the states (Table 1), 13 articles describing risk factors or variables associated with BCC occurrence ( Table 2) and 4 describing the economic burden of BCC [7,22,28,30]. Furthermore, a set of 10 studies performed in Brazil were also included, regarding at least one aspect presented in discussion section, such as efficacy of chemical treatment (n = 1) [62], preferential infection sites (n = 2) [63,64], development of serological tests (n = 4) [65][66][67][68] and measures for BCC control (n = 3) [69][70][71].…”

“…Economic losses resulting from cysticercosis have been estimated from US$175,000 to US$4 million due to the treatment, condemnation and disposal of carcasses in various countries. In turn, the annual losses associated with hydatidosis have been estimated at values ranging from US$ 72,000 to US$ 212 million in the productivity of different animal species (Jansen et al 2018b, Laranjo-González et al 2018, Rezende et al 2018, Henckel et al 2020). These numbers point out the need to adopt efficient control measures to reduce the occurrence of these zoonoses.…”
