Changes in permanent preservation areas in rural properties of the Santa Catarina state southern plateau according to the laws No. 4,771 and 12,651

Abstract: This research aimed to study the parameters of the current and past Brazilian Forest Act based on the Federal Laws No. 4,771 and 12,651 for the determination of the permanent preservation areas (PPA). Water springs and streams for 68 rural properties located at the Santa Catarina State Southern Plateau were considered. Thematic land use/land cover (LULC) as well as PPA maps from the visual interpretation of ortho rectified aerial images were elaborated. The PPA percentage for recovering over consolidated rural… Show more

“…Comparing the results of the recovery areas found in this research with other works, Bonamigo et al (2017) analyzed 68 properties in the Santa Catarina state southern plateau. In rural properties that have between 1 and 2 fiscal modules, and that present a consolidated rural area, they found that the area to be recomposed represents, on average, 9% of the property area.…”

“…First, a drainage network is extracted using digital elevation models (DEM) from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) as input. After, PPA from both springs and rivers can be determined using distance buffers (Mello, et al, 2014;Bonamigo et al, 2017). However, it is noticed from previous mentioned researches that the GIS user is usually responsible for setting-up the buffer distances for each river segment.…”
