Histopathological, immunohistochemical and biomolecular diagnosis of myocarditis due to Clostridium chauvoei in a bovine

Abstract: The aim of this study was to report a case of clostridial myocarditis in a bovine in Brazil with emphasis on the pathological findings, isolation and molecular identification associated with the in situ localization of C. chauvoei. The animal, a male Brangus bull with nine months of age, was found dead without prior clinical signs. Multifocal and coalescent areas of necrosis were observed in the myocardium. Rod cells in the cardiac muscle fibers were positive immunostaining for C. chauvoei, while this bacteriu… Show more

“…This agent is responsible for blackleg, a very common disease in cattle that occurs also in large outbreaks (LOBATO et al, 2013). Notably, in the cases where only C. chauvoei was detected, the owners reported that animals with good nutrition and in good health were affected, which also corroborates previous studies (WILLIAMS, 1977;ASSIS et al, 2010;GROSETH et al, 2011;CASAGRANDE et al, 2015).…”

“…Two samples from myocardial muscle were positive for C. chauvoei alone, confirming the diagnosis of clostridial myocarditis, a manifestation of blackleg that commonly leads to sudden death in bovines (UZAL et al, 2003a;CASAGRANDE et al, 2015). In fact, among the 28 cases evaluated, eight (28.6%) reported sudden death of apparently healthy animals, including the three diagnosed with clostridial myocarditis.…”

“…In addition to classical clinical signs of black disease, a few of the sick animals showed nose bleeding which is unusual clinical signs in naturally or experimentally infected cattle. At necropsy, the pathognomic lesions of black disease were prominent and all dead animals showed hemorrhagic myositis, crepitus sounds, rancid odor and necrotizing lesions in muscles of the neck, hind and front quarters [21,22]. Severe cardiac lesions have been observed; mainly diffuse necrohemorrhagic myocarditis associated with extensive enlargement of the spleen.…”

“…Pires et al (15), in studies of pigs, and Casagrande et al (5), in studies of cattle, using the streptavidinbiotin-peroxidase technique, reported positive staining in immunohistochemical analysis. In this study, performed by similar methods, positive immunohistochemical results were obtained that supported gross, microscopical, and microbiological findings, similar to those of the researchers.…”
