“…Lessons learned and value added: Different from the majority of the reported ICM cases in German small and medium sized enterprises, the indicator module was crucial for the large and dispersed organization SENAI to allow for an objective comparison of the business performance and managerial maturity of 25 institutes in 13 different federal states. Using a standard set of KPIs as the quantitative view on the ISI management model was therefore an important step in the implementation of a suitable management system which resulted in the standardized “KPI Dashboard” (for more details see Will et al , 2020). It is essential, and understood by the leading managers at SENAI by now, that these KPIs are just one layer of analysis which may give valuable and objective insights on management challenges and performance gaps, but are not sufficient for a full, in-depth analysis of the managerial health and strategic development nor the goal, but rather a means to quantify strategic objectives and the individual pathways to business success for each innovation institute.…”
