Can the Application of Multi-Mode Adhesive be a Substitute to Silicatized/Silanized Y-TZP Ceramics?

Abstract: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a multi-mode adhesive (SBU-Scotch Bond Universal/3M) as a substitute for silica coating and silane application on the bonding of zirconia ceramics to resin cement. One-hundred and twenty sintered zirconia ceramic blocks (5 x 5 x 5 mm) were obtained, finished by grounding with silicon carbide paper (#600, #800, #1000 and #1200) and randomly divided into 12 groups (n=10) in accordance with the factors “surface treatment” (ScSi - silicatization + silanization; ScSBU - sil… Show more

“…Shear, microshear, tensile and microtensile tests can be used to evaluate bond strength. Despite the limitations of the shear test, sample standardization and easy preparation, as well as suitable laboratory equipment make this test a commonly used methodology to determine the adhesive strength of dental materials [12,15].…”

“…And, when followed by the application of the adhesive system, the higher bond strength values were achieved. A bonding agent has long been used with composite resin in restorative dentistry [12]. It improves surface wettability by causing the resin infiltrate into microscopic surface irregularities [8,17].…”

“…The association of methods has shown better bond strength results than their separate use. Thus, aluminum oxide sandblasting followed by the application of zirconia primers, as well as tribochemical silica coating followed by silanization, are the two most popular methods for bonding to zirconia ceramic [19,22,23]. However, the most suitable clinical protocol is still under discussion for zirconia ceramic [20].…”

“…Por su inercia química muchos investigadores sugieren realizar tratamientos en la superficie interna de ella para mejorar su adhesión. Tratamientos como el arenado triboquímico (Sistema Cojet o Rocatec 3M ESPE, St.Paul, MN; EEUU) es actualmente el gold estándar cuando de adherirla con cementos resinosos se trata [56][57][58] .…”
