Analysis of co-authorship patterns at the individual level

Abstract: Publication activity, citation impact and communication patterns, in general, change in the course of a scientist's career. Mobility and radical changes in a scientist's research environment or profile are among the most spectacular factors that have effect on individual collaboration patterns. Although bibliometrics at this level should be applied with the utmost care, characteristic patterns of an individual scientist's research collaboration and changes in these in the course of a career can be well depicte… Show more

“…Even though a bibliometric approach is not the perfect tool for all fields and in all circumstances, there are many publications that confirm the fact that bibliometric analysis is used as a tool by all scientific communities: to appraise the quality of a research field [36,37]; to evaluate the quality of a journal [38,39]; to establish a scientific portrait by looking at the activity of a researcher, or group of researchers [40,41]; to classify types of scientific networks and map scientific collaborations, on inter-institutional, national, and international levels [42,43]; to evaluate the influence of financing certain programs and/or projects on scientific production [44,45]; to set up hierarchies, by comparing one country to another, one institution in relation to a country, and even researchers and scientists in relation to their own scientific communities [6,[46][47][48]. At the same time, bibliometric analysis can be applied to macro analyses (e.g., a country's quota in the global production of scientific literature during a given period of time), as well as to micro studies (e.g., the role of an institution in producing articles in a scientific field) [45,49].…”

“…The total number, the average number (mean and median) and the maximum number of coauthors are determined for different periods in order to analyze their progress in time (Laudel, 2002;Glänzel, 2014). Furthermore, the number and percentage of single authored publications as well as the author"s publication role (number and percentage of publications where the researcher is first, last and/or corresponding author) are studied for different periods.…”

“…It might provide important information on the scientists' own contribution to the research output included in their official scientific biography. In conjunction with the h-core analysis, this helps to clarify details on the extent of the examined scientist's real contribution to the research output shared by themselves and the achieved citation impact of these publications [67]. The leanness of the connections across the communities denotes the fact that most of the journals which belong to the same community tend to cite the same publications within their community, and rarely reference articles from other communities [68].…”
