The increase in life expectancy and the percentage increase in the older population are related to the reduction in quality of life and social life due to the biopsychosocial changes inherent to the aging process. The present study aimed to verify scientific evidence on the relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms among older adults. An integrative review was carried out using the following databases: SCOPUS, PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL and PyscINFO, applying the descriptors indexed in the Mesh Terms and DeCS “aged”, “loneliness”, “depression”. The PICOS strategy was used to prepare the title and guiding question and the PRISMA methodological guidelines were used to write the report of this review. A total of 827 articles were identified, of which 23 were selected, 16 from the database and seven through a reverse search. Loneliness and depression have some characteristics in common, so that when one of these conditions develops in older adults, another is stimulated. Thus, loneliness is a major risk factor for the development of depression, just as depression is an aggravating factor for loneliness in older adults.

Relationship between family functionality and the quality of life of the elderly

Objective: To analyze the correlation between family functionality and the quality of life of the elderly. Method: Sectional and correlational study conducted with 692 Brazilian elderly between July and October 2020. The elderly filled three instruments: biosociodemographic, family APGAR and WHOQOL-Old. The tests Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson correlation, and linear regression analyzed the data. The study considered a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05) for all analyses. Results: The elderly with mild and severe family dysfunction presented worse quality of life when compared to the elderly with a functional family. All facets of quality of life correlated positively with family functionality. Conclusion: Family functionality is positively correlated with the quality of life of the elderly, therefore requiring the inclusion of the family in health care plans to identify potential family stressors early and plan interventions to solve the problems raised.

Objetivo: identificar as características sociodemográficas de pessoas idosas da comunidade e analisar a Qualidade de Vida e as Atividades Avançadas da Vida Diária. Método: estudo quantitativo, descritivo, analítico e transversal. Amostra de 262 pessoas idosas, de ambos os sexos e residentes na região Sudeste brasileira. Os instrumentos utilizados foram Caracterização sociodemográfica de saúde; Escala de Qualidade de Vida de Pessoa Idosa de Vitor e Escala de Atividades Avançadas da Vida Diária. Resultados: a Qualidade de Vida Total obteve a M=184,8 (Dp=18,6); Domínios: Autonomia e Dimensão Psicológica M=42,0 (Dp=5,1); Meio Ambiente M=30,4 (Dp=8,5); Independência Física M=25,1 (Dp=4,0); Família M=28,7 (Dp=4,0); Saúde M=21,4 (Dp=3,3) e Dimensão Social M=37,2 (Dp=4,2). As Atividades Avançadas da Vida Diária Total obtiveram M=26,7 (Dp=5,2); Fatores: Social M=10,6 (Dp=1,7); Lazer M=8,6 (Dp=2,6) e produtivo M=7,5 (Dp=2,7). Os domínios relacionados à escala EQVI se correlacionaram significativamente com os domínios da escala de AAVD de forma direta e apenas o domínio “Saúde” não se correlacionou com domínio algum da escala AAVD, o domínio “Meio Ambiente” se correlacionou com os domínios das AAVD de forma indireta. Conclusão: as pessoas idosas com maior participação nas AAVD apresentaram melhor QV, nas dimensões independência física, família e social.
