<p>Objetivo: Compreender o comportamento suicida com base no Modelo de Teorias de Sistemas de Betty Neuman. Método: Pesquisa qualitativa, realizada entre agosto e setembro 2018 com estudantes de enfermagem sobreviventes ao suicídio de uma instituição privada de ensino superior do Distrito Federal. Os dados foram submetidos a análise de conteúdo com auxílio do software Alceste e interpretada sob a ótica da teoria de enfermagem de Betty Neuman. Resultados: Os resultados ressaltaram as estratégias utilizadas pelos indivíduos para manejar os estressores a época, a influência das famílias disfuncionais no comportamento suicida e as atitudes positivas adotadas pelos sobreviventes na reconstrução de suas vidas após a tentativa. Considerações Finais: A Teoria de Sistemas de Betty Neuman comprovou ser uma ferramenta competente para o entendimento do fenômeno social do suicídio e figurar no rol das perspectivas da compreensão teórico-filosófica de tal situação, colocando em evidência a ciência da enfermagem.</p>

This document is a short review article on the psycho-physiological considerations of low self-esteem. The methodology used was the bibliographic review of those selected texts that are related to the subject in question. Addressing from the definition of low self-esteem, to its symptoms, physiological repercussions and some final considerations. It is concluded that this critical emotional episode should be dealt with in a timely manner by psychology specialists, to avoid the general deterioration of physical and mental health.

Objective: to evaluate and compare the self-esteem of young female university students aged between 18 and 24 years old according to race/skin color criteria. Method: a cross-sectional and quantitative study, developed with 240 undergraduate female students from a public Brazilian university. Data collection took place online through a structured questionnaire that included the participants’ sociodemographic and lifestyle habits, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, association test, and comparison of means were used. Results: most of the young women had a mean level of self-esteem. No statistically significant association was found among the “self-esteem level” and “self-reported skin color or race” variables. Conclusion: although no significant association was identified between self-reported skin color or race and level of self-esteem, young black women have lower mean self-esteem scores than young non-black women. Strategies that strengthen the self-esteem of young female university students are necessary to prevent harms to their physical and mental health, and, consequently, to their academic performance.
