Objective:to analyze the anxiety level of the mothers of newborns with congenital malformations who were diagnosed in prenatal and postnatal care. Methods:a cross-sectional study with 115 mothers of 117 newborns with congenital malformation admitted to three neonatal units. A questionnaire containing maternal and neonatal variables was used, as well as the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory. Data were analyzed by Student’s t-test and Kolmogorov-Sminorv test. The anxiety level was categorized as low (percentile <25), moderate (25-75) and high (> 75), with a significance level of 5%. Results:most mothers had moderate levels of anxiety. Regarding the diagnosis of the malformation, 57% received the news in the prenatal and 43% in the postnatal period. The anxiety level of those who received the prenatal diagnosis was lower than those who received in the postnatal period, evaluated by the Trait Anxiety Inventory (p = 0.026). Conclusion:mothers of newborns with malformations presented moderate anxiety, and this was higher when the diagnosis was given in the postnatal period. The use of the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory can provide guidance to other studies and to clinical practice.

Gastroesophageal Reﬂ ux Disease: Psychological Assessment of Children and Caregivers

Gastroesophageal Refl ux Disease (GERD) with high prevalence and incidence in the pediatric population is a relevant issue in public health. The literature associates family psychosocial aspects with chronic childhood illness. The present study examined the psychological alterations and peculiarities of caregivers and of children with GERD (n = 26) and healthy children (n = 30) from 3 to 12 years of age. Instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire and Assessment of Risk Factors for Child Illness; Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; and Rutter's Child Behavior Scale (A2), all of which were administered to the caregivers. Quantitative data analysis (χ2 test, Fisher's exact test and ANOVA) was performed, respecting each instrument's respective criteria. In the group of children with GERD, we observed both a higher incidence of alcohol and/or drug use/abuse and higher levels of anxiety and depression on the part of the caregivers, as well as psychosocial problems involving the child. In light of the developmental level expected for this age group, greater frequency of behavioral problems was also observed. We thus conclude that there is a correlation between family psychological traits and GERD in children, stressing the need for conducting further studies and for supervising interdisciplinary clinical practices in the health care of this population.

Construction and Evidence of Validity of the Positive Discipline Parenting Skills Scale

This article presents the construction and evidence of validity of an instrument for measuring parenting skills based on Positive Discipline, an approach that helps parents and caregivers teach life skills to their children. The items were constructed based on a theoretical review of Parenting Styles, Schema Therapy, and Positive Discipline and were subsequently evaluated by five expert judges and five individuals from the target audience. Following these evaluations, eight items were excluded and others were changed, leading to the pilot version of the Positive Discipline Parenting Skills Scale (Escala de Habilidades Parentais em Disciplina Positiva -EHPDP), represented by 28 items. Data were collected from a sample of 281 mothers with children aged 4-12 years. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a structure of 16 items divided into three factors. Cronbach's Alpha and Composite Reliability indicated adequate internal consistency for the instrument. Pearson's correlation revealed evidence of convergent and discriminant validity with the validated Brazilian versions of the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. The results indicate that the EHPDP is a valid and reliable instrument to measure Positive Discipline parenting skills.
