Perception and use of non-native and invasive flora from Sierras de Córdoba in central Argentina

Abstract: Th e perception, knowledge and use of non-native and invasive fl ora by social actors associated with protected areas in central Argentina were analyzed. Contemporary ethnoecology methods were followed. A total of 108 non-native species of botanical interest was documented. An organization of species is proposed according to their Relative Importance, and on an attitude scale in relation to conservation/elimination interest. In the case of invasive species, perceptions on ecology, importance and/or control are… Show more

“…The native species used indicate local particularities due to phytogeographical and sociocultural differences. Furthermore, the exotic species are influenced not only by environmental requirements, but also multiple cultural factors-associated with selection, use and management-which determine their importance in the culture and domestic life of rural areas and define their establishment in any particular region (Martínez and Manzano-García 2019).…”

“…The prominence being gained by exotic species due to certain advantages they have over native species has been emphasised by several authors. These advantages are related to growth patterns, availability and accessibility, and offer numerous benefits to locals (Cardoso et al 2015;Doumecq 2019;Martínez and Manzano-García 2019;Medeiros 2013;Morales et al 2017;Santos et al 2014;Silva et al 2018).…”

“…The shrub produces spectacular displays of orange berries in autumn and winter. Additionally, in Argentina, Martínez and Manzano-García (2019) suggest the species has ethnobotanical importance because of its ornamental use and the ecosystem services that it provides, such as shade and food for birds. Due to its short stout thorns and dense foliage, the shrub is also extensively used as a barrier plant, including use as decorative windbreaks and security hedges (Bromilow 2001;Csurhes et al 2016;Giantomasi et al 2008;Henderson 1983Henderson , 2011.…”

“…Si bien no se encuentra registrada para la Flora Argentina , se han hallado numerosas poblaciones naturalizadas de Robinia pseudoacacia en las provincias de Neuquén y Río Negro, tanto en canales de riego como de drenaje. En este sentido, numerosos trabajos han reportado anteriormente su presencia en Argentina (Ghersa et al, 2002;Martin, 2019;Martínez & Manzano-García, 2019).…”
