Fungal endophyte diversity in the leaves of the medicinal plant Myracrodruon urundeuva in a Brazilian dry tropical forest and their capacity to produce L-asparaginase

Abstract: We studied the fungal endophyte community of the leaves of Myracrodruon urundeuva in Brazil along with their potential to produce L-asparaginase. In total, 187 endophytes were isolated. The colonization rate of leaf fragments from caatinga (10.41 %) was lower than those from brejo de altitude (39.58 %). Sequences of ITS rDNA from all endophytes revealed relationships with Ascomycota (Botryosphaeriales, Chaetothyriales, Diaporthales, Eurotiales, Glomerellales, Hypocreales, and Pleosporales) and Basidiomycota (P… Show more

“…According to the result of a planned planting area with lower diversity of endophytic fungi when compared to the diversity of other areas and can be explained by the homogeneity of the vegetation (Pádua et al, 2019). Meanwhile, the areas of natural habitat and human interaction showed close diversity value, suggesting that the heterogeneity of the vegetation of both environments result in the diversification of the endophytic fungi found (Padua et al, 2019).…”

“…excess salt, high temperatures, nutrient deficiencies). However, the complex relationship between endophytic fungi and their hosts remains poorly understood (Pádua, 2019). One of the first compounds to be isolated from endophytic fungi was Taxus brevifolia, which showed high anticancer activity, paving the way for further studies and applications of secondary metabolites produced by endophytic fungi (Bezerra et al, 2015).…”

“…This symbiosis between endophytes and their plant hosts can have profound impacts on plant communities and ecosystems, leading to favourable physiological and ecological relationships for environmental balance (Hardoim et al 2015;Brader et al 2017). In addition, fungal endophytes can synthesise several bioactive natural products, thereby making them an important biotechnological resource (Bezerra et al 2012(Bezerra et al , 2015Pádua et al 2019).…”
