Orchidaceae of the Grumari restinga: floristic and similarity among restingas in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil

Abstract: Orchidaceae is one of the largest and most diverse plant families in the world. The number of floristic studies of this family in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, has increased significantly in recent years. However, only a few such studies have been conducted in areas of restinga vegetation and none of those have examined the similarity, in terms of orchid diversity, among such areas. The present study sought to improve our knowledge of the Orchidaceae diversity occurring in Grumari restinga, as well to compare … Show more

“…However, this relationship no longer occurs from the Maricá restinga northwards. An influence of hillside forests on floristic groupings in this region was also found by Moreira et al (2014) for species of Orchidaceae in restinga areas of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Our results suggest a reduction in the influence of hillside forests in a northern direction Table 2.…”

“…It is one of the smallest fragments of restinga in the state of Rio de Janeiro and is frequently subjected to anthropogenic impacts (Vidal & Vidal 1977/78;Rocha et al 2007). It has 951 ha within the Grumari Environmental Protection Area (APA Grumari), comprising four formations: halophilouspsammophilous, post-beach, open shrub and restinga forests (Moreira et al 2014).…”

“…The annual average temperature and rainfall correspond to 23.6 o C and 1100 mm, respectively (Moreira et al 2014). The soil is sandy and saline, and there are swampy areas with organic matter accumulation (Oliveira & Maia 2005).…”

“…The soil is sandy and saline, and there are swampy areas with organic matter accumulation (Oliveira & Maia 2005). The Grumari restinga presents six vegetation types: halophilous, psammophilous, post-beach, open shrub, closed shrub and restinga forest (Moreira et al 2014). We sampled the epiphytic flora in the closed shrub formation dominated by Myrtaceae and Fabaceae, which can reach up to 15 meters high.…”
