Show more

“…Therefore, the longer period of time produces the highest spontaneous remission rates and the lowest PTSD prevalence. In terms of measures used, the CIDI, used in our study, provides the categorical diagnosis of mental disorders based on DSM-IV, while other studies used different PTSD or depression symptom scales [5,21,24,29,34,36,49]. Prevalence varies according to the extent of exposure.…”

“…Indeed, a meta-analysis has shown that the most powerful predictor of PTSD is a prior history of PTSD [19] and that a history of other psychiatric disorders is another of the most powerful risk factors in predicting PTSD [20]. Nevertheless, the great majority of studies focusing on risk factors for mental disorders after disasters have not assessed preexisting psychiatric problems [5,12,2136]. In this study, we have therefore tried to focus on the effects of a history of PTSD and other mental disorders on post-disaster outcomes and explaining the associations of other predictors with these outcomes using data from a community epidemiological survey that was already on going in the Murcia region of Spain at the time of the Lorca earthquake [37].…”

“…The survey included a set of questions for the sociodemographic characterization of the sample, in accordance with the formats used in Chile's 2010 postearthquake survey. 7,15 In order to measure resiliency in the sample, a Spanishvalidated version of the resilience scale (RS-14) was used. 16,17 The scale was modified to specifically refer to the earthquakes that occurred in Mexico.…”

“…Several studies reveal that earthquakes are stressful events for the affected communities and have great psychosocial impact. [6][7][8][9] However, not all people respond to the stress generated by a disaster in the same manner. 10 Some people face the adverse situations presented after an earthquake without negative effects in their psychosocial functioning.…”
